Story

William Green and his wife Susan left Norfolk in England, with 4 small children to make a better life for them all in a new country.

They were aboard “The Humboldt” a merchant ship carrying 295 passengers and 28 crew. Three children died from infantile fever, 2 of whom belonged to William & Susan. They arrived in Sydney on 19th December,1852.They were assisted passengers and paid four pounds for their trip. (Still a lot of money then.) It must have been hard for them to arrive with only half their children.

They decided to stay in Sydney and settled in the Chippendale area and added another 3 children to their family. William was a baker and had a shop at 44 Rosehill Street, Redfern.

My family are descended from William Green and Louisa Cook (he was their second child born in England in 1846), he worked as a navvy for the railways after leaving school, helping to build the line as part of the “Frog Island Railway Camp”, from Sydney, down to Goulburn and then to Bathurst where they settled. He then became a shed foreman. They had 10 children many of whom still live around the area. They lived in Busby Street (the same street as Ben Chifley.) His descendants continued to work for the railways and 4 generations later some still do.
