Story

William and his wife Mary departed England to improve their life and that for their family. This was not unusual. William was the son of James Annett [First Generation] and was born 1806 in Kent .

William and Mary sailed from Plymouth on 21 May 1852. After a journey of 3 months and 4 days they disembarked at Portland Victoria.

On arrival the Government supplied the family a round tent and they camped in this. William’s occupation was that of a farm labourer in Kent and then a policeman in 1856 he was transferred to Port Fairy Victoria.

William died 12 Aug 1883 in Portland.

There is scant information on their impressions but certainly a tent for a home would have been a shock particularly with seven children. At one stage William was summoned to England to collect a substantial inheritance of Mills in the Midlands he declined to leave his wife and thus it went to the Chancery in England.
