Story

William and his new bride Sarah Ann, nee Reynolds, applied for a Free Passage to South Australia, were accepted and left Dublin aboard the sailing ship “William Nichol” and arrived in their new country on July 7th, 1840.

William and Sarah were among 181 others on board ship. There were married couples and children along with single men and women. The William Nichol, built in 1834 was only 409 tons – a midget compared to today’s giant ships.

William and Sarah set up house in the Albert Town area near to Port Adelaide. William applied to, and was accepted by, the Police Force. However, prior to taking up duty took a position as a cutler. At the birth of his third child, he stated his profession was shepherd.

Sarah gave birth to six children , William junior, Robert, Letitia Ann, Sarah Henrietta, Charles Sylvester and John.

The family moved from South Australia to Moyston in Victoria during the gold rush and took up varied occupations: Contractor, shepherd, hotel owner, woolbinder, vigneron and miner.

Their descendants number over 900.
