Story
Migration Story of William Kaye-Smith.
William Kaye-Smith was born at Sutherland England into a family of four (4) boys and one (1) girl in 1902. His father was employed at a shipbuilding firm as a labourer and rope maker.
William married Wilhelmina Wilson on 5-5-1924 at Sunderland, England. They had two children who passed away within a week of each other in a ‘flu\’ epidemic.
In a distressed state, William decided to migrate to Australia to find work in 1925, sailing on the ‘S.S. Berruna’. Wilhelmina followed him in 1927 on the Steam Ship ‘Euripides’ from England and landed at Port Adelaide.
It was hard to find work so he went to Broken Hill and was employed as a pithead carpenter for approx. two (2) years. He left Broken Hill and purchased a small mixed farm at Greystanes, N.S.W., during the 1930\’s depression, where there were four (4) boys born.
He lost his farm in 1936 (he only owed 80 pounds on the property ) and then they moved to Wentworthville South, built his own home where he lived for the rest of his life.
When World War II started he was working on the Sydney waterfront as a shipwright. Wilhelmina was employed at Arnott\’s Biscuit Factory at Homebush.
After retiring they travelled to Europe, England and Canada numerous times.
They have 21 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and an unknown number of great-great grandchildren.
