Story
The story of the Bryants of Mutton Falls begins with their arrival in Sydney, after a passage of 107 days, on the ship the ‘Earl Grey’. The date of departure from England is given as 9th March, 1841, and the date of arrival as 24th June, 1841. On board were 294 passengers comprising 239 Protestants and 55 Catholics. Twelve passengers died on the way out. It is noted that Divine Service, obviously on open deck, was held as often as the weather permitted.
The embarkation papers tell us that Walter was aged 34 in good health, could read and write. His occupation was farm hand and his religion was Protestant. His wife Mary was aged 28 in good health and could read and write. Her occupation was farm hand and her religion was Weslyan.
William and Mary brought five children with them: Thomas aged 9, Walter aged 8, Mary aged 4, Richard aged 3 and Dorothea aged 1.
The family were Bounty Migrants. This term means that, being free migrants the shipping company was paid an additional sum of ten pound per person to bring them to Australia.
William and Mary bought a parcel of crown land at Mutton Falls on the Fish River. They had four more children: Catherine 1842, Elizabeth 1844, John 1846 and Wiilliam 1849.
Walter died on 28/2/1890 and Mary died 26/9/1900. Both are buried at Mutton Falls.
