Story
My father unwittingly was accused of instigating tribalism which led to threats to burn our house and kill us. My parents were from the Seychelles Islands and being non-African and British Subjects we reluctantly had to leave a country we dearly loved. My father Marcel, mother Angele, sister Yvonne and I became migrants.
In February 1965 we flew to Aden in South Yemen and caught the P&O liner “Orsova” there. We spent 21 days on a ship full of mostly English migrants, stopping at Bombay, Singapore and Fremantle arriving in Adelaide.
Adelaide appeared a backwater after Nairobi, but it was quiet, safe and the locals were friendly, accepting and hospitable. The locals spoke a rapid form of English that took some getting used to and the sight of a white man sweeping the streets was difficult to get used to. After temperate Nairobi the cold of winter and heat of summer was hard to adjust to, but the availability of apples and peaches was everything a thirteen year old could wish for. It was a brilliant move!
