Story
At the age of 23 I was considering a working holiday to Australia because my 2 elder sisters were in Australia . My father then said if you are going to Australia then so are your mother and I. My sister Eileen was in the WAFs during the war and met and married a neat Australian squadron leader who had flown numerous missions over Germany including G for George and came to Australia as a war bride. My elder sister and her husband Arthur emigated to West Australia a couple of years later and went to Mullawa and ran a haulage business for 8 years, Mullawa being the end of the rail, and he carted supplies up the northen line to the stations
In 1960 my sister Eileen and her husband Ron Douglas who worked for the Shell company had been transfered to Wollongong NSW so through family reunion we arrived in Sydney, sailing on the Fairsky in Jan 1960.
I remember boarding the Fairsky in Southampton and not seeing my parents for 2 days because I was seasick. It was interesting moving through the Suez canal with the locals sending items up in baskets from their little boats which they had for sale. We arrived at Aden at night my memory was that it was very hot and smelly – people just sleeping in the dusty street. We were met by friends at Fremantle; taken for lunch to Kings Park then back to the ship to continue our journey to Sydney.
Impressions – The sight of the Harbour Bridge – a beautiful sunny day – the drive to Wollongong and the great view of the ocean from Bulli lookout and being reunited with my family.
