Story
I was born at Catanzaro, Italy on 24th September 1934. My parents were Bruno and Rosa (De Iesi) Sinopoli. My brother was already living in Melbourne and he sponsored me to come to Australia. I sailed from Italy on the Galileo on the 18th April 1964. I arrived in Melbourne on the 10th May and married Italo Dall’Armi in Melbourne in 1965.
It was very difficult learning English. We lived with Italo’s parents for nine years when I came to Broken Hill and we only spoke Italian in the home. Then I had five young kids and I had no time.
When the kids went to school, I worked at the Tuck Shop. That helped me become part of the community. I walked everywhere.
I’ve been happy in Broken Hill, especially with the children when they were young. The kids went to school at St. Peter and Paul’s and Sacred Heart College. There were no worries. I was very happy.
I’m very proud of my children. The three girls are married now. Rosa’s an accountant with the government. Lucia’s a school teacher. Pina’s a Doctor of Science and working for the Army. Lino is a tax accountant and Giorgio, the last one is a mining engineer. Today, the children are grown up and live away but I am still very happy here.
