Story
During 1979 Elaine Hollingsworth and I decided that we no longer wished to live in the USA. (Crowds, pollution, traffic, oppressive government.)
We knew that we wanted an English-speaking country, with a warm climate and stable government. After much research, we decided on Australia.
The application process required many months. Then, family obligations prevented our immediate departure.
I arrived here by air in October 1982. I travelled the length of the East Coast, from Sydney to Cooktown. We decided that Sydney was too cold in the winter, and Cairns too hot in the summer. The Gold Coast has a wonderful year-around climate, so we decided to locate here.
Elaine bought a property at Mudgeeraba, and we made our final move in January 1985. A few months later I bought another property nearby, and founded Hippocrates Health Centre of Australia. Since then, the business has flourished as a result of our hard work and dedication.
We became Australian citizens a few years later, but really consider ourselves “citizens of the world.”
We tend to forget how technologically primitive the world was in 1982. No mobile phones – no pushbutton phones – no internet – no fax machines. Australia was certainly more isolated then, but we didn’t mind.
