Story
Robert Watson Hughes AO, MBE (Part 2)
Robert remained with the ABC as Music Arranger/Editor, Music Department, Melbourne until his retirement in 1976. Part of the job entailed arranging and editing scores to fit the MSO. He conducted some rehearsals and studio broadcasts. In 1958 a concurrent appointment as Composer/Director on the Board of Directors of the Australasian Performing Right Association, advancing and protecting the legal rights of ownership for Australian composers. Chairman of the Board 1977-1985.
Composing at night, weekends and any spare moments, he is known particularly for his orchestral music including symphonies, ballets and music for film and television.
Commissions, honours, prizes; awarded an MBE 1978 and an AO 2005 for Services to Australian Music mark a stellar career. He declined overseas appointments saying, ‘coming to Australia was the best thing that ever happened to me’. He founded and served on many boards and committees helping create opportunities for Australian composers.
Family, travel and Church activities filled the little available time well into retirement. Janet passed away suddenly in 1993; although understanding little of the mechanics of music she was his sounding board and strength.
In1995 Robert moved to Dover Heights, Sydney to live with his youngest daughter and family, enjoying the busy young household, helping with everyday chores, Bondi Junction Rotary Club; concerts and the opera whenever possible.
Robert\’s final move to Hallett Cove, south of Adelaide in 2002 in his 90th year brought himself, his three girls and their husbands all together again in one State. He enjoyed five happy, healthy, fulfilled years.
His knowledge of many subjects, interest in all around him, music every day, outings and a general joy of living endeared him to all.
Robert\’s health deteriorated suddenly, necessitating hospitalisation. He passed away aged 95 on August 1 2007 with daughter Gwen at his side.
