Robert Northey was born in Gwennap, Cornwell 1821. Very little is known about his early life; he was a Protestant, he could read and write, and worked in the mines. He married Peternal Whitford Tremberth on 24 November 1838. Looking for a better life, Robert, Perternal and their 8 children migrated to Australia in 1863, on the ship ‘Lobelia\’, and the family had no complaints on the voyage. The trip was funded by his brother William, totaling a cost of 37 pounds. 8 pounds for Robert, 6 pounds for Perternal, 5 pounds for William (aged 20) and Robert (aged 13), 3 pounds each for Mary (aged 22), Ann (aged 16), and James (aged 7), 2 pounds each for Elizabeth (aged 10) and Jane (aged 8), Grace (aged 7 months) was free.

Robert worked as a miner in the ore mines at Hill End and Cadia, and Perternal worked as a Tailoress.

Robert died on the 4 May 1886 in Cadia of kidney disease. Perternal unknown.
