Story

Robert was born 25/08/1833 to John and Martha Brown in the Parish of Tartaraghan, Co., Armagh, Northern Ireland. Robert’s wife Mary Jane Haughey was born in Down, Northern Ireland 18/03/1832

They married in the Parish Church in the Parish of Tullylish, Co. Down, Ireland according to the rites of the Church of England and Ireland on the 12/10/1854 – both were of full age. Robert’s occupation- labourer, his address – Tartaraghan, Co. Armagh, Ireland. His father John’s occupation- weaver.

They arrived on the ship”Ramillies,” which sailed from Liverpool, England and Cork, Ireland departing 07/04/1855. They disembarked at Moreton Bay 30/11/1855. There were 77 immigrants on board. During the voyage their first child was born and named William John, he was about 6 weeks old when the ship berthed in Moreton Bay.

The couple settled firstly at Wambo Station in 1857 when the Wilson brothers had a sub lease of the property. Later they lived at Warkon Station and Condamine. They invested in bullock drays in which they transported many early squatters from Ipswich to the west, taking back on the return trip hides, wool and tallow etc.

An application for a Queensland Timber lic. was granted to Robert Brown 11/07/1874. Description of license – for hardwood, cost 1 pound.

Their son Robert recalled in his youth while working for his father on the transport of goods, it was the practice at night for his father and another carrier named Carl Dueffel, to draw their drays into a circle to guard against the possibilities of a night attack by the aborigines.

Mary Jane was a very energetic and industrious person. A fine needlewoman, she made on her hand machine all manner of garments, dressing her daughters and sons from top to toe. She could outfit jockeys, manufacturing their caps and breeches and provided many wedding dresses for brides.

Wilhelmine Caroline born 1873 married William Frederick Rayner in 1892

James August Francis born 1876 married Hildegarde Ladiska Dueffel in 1897

Robert died 26/01/1900 and Mary Jane died 21/01/1915.

They both are buried in the Condamine Cemetery.
