Story

Patrick, his wife Mary, son Jeremiah and daughters Nancy & Honoria left their home in Tipperary, Ireland for Australia on board the Wanata. They probably left Ireland to escape the aftermouth of the potato famine.

The Wanata sailed from Liverpool on 10th June 1852 and arrived in Melbourne on 4th October 1852. During the voyage Patrick’s two daughters died and a new daughter, Johanna was born. There were 52 deaths among the 782 passengers on this journey.

On arrival in Melbourne the family went straight to the goldfields around Ballarat and were in or in the vicinity of the Eureka Stockade during the uprising. Patrick was later reimbursed 60 pounds because the troopers had burnt his tent and belongings during the uprising.

From Ballarat the family moved to the Bellarine Pennisula and farmed land in the area, eventually moving to land in the Tungamah area, south of the Murray River. In all, Patrick and Mary had 13 chlildren. Patrick died in Tungamah in 1887 at the age of 66 and Mary died in 1915 at the age of 87. Both are buried in the Tungamah cemetery.
