Story
Nunzio Monitto was born at Sortino, in the Province of Siracusa, on the Island of Sicily, Italy on the 26th of January, 1941. At the age of of 19, Nunzio decided to imigrate to Australia, leaving his homeland in search of adventure and to be reunited with his brother; who had also made the journey seven years before. Nunzio left behind his mother, two brothers and a younger sister.
After a long sea journey Nunzio arrived in Australia in 1960. He initially found it difficult to settle in as the way of life was very different and he spoke no English.
Nunzio first moved into his brother’s house in Footscray, Victoria and soon found his first job at a Glass factory in Spotswood. Very soon after, the lure of higher wages led Nunzio into the construction industry. He worked for PMG preparing trenches for phone installations and then for Ascom as a steel fixer on concrete silos in Sunshine and Portland.
In 1964, Nunzio secured a position with an Italian company – Electric Power Transmission assembling high tension power line towers. This job offered Nunzio the opportunity to live and work around other parts of Australia over the next three years. They completed towers between Khancoban and Yass in NSW and also travelled to other remote sites in Queensland and Victoria.
In 1967, Nunzio returned to settle in Melbourne where he began work with his brother as a concretor. This was to be Nunzio’s occupation and business for the next forty years.
In 1968, Nunzio married Ida Giannotti and together they have five children Clara, Marina, twin sons Gino and Carlo and Rai. He also has two grand daughters, Julia and Claudia, children of his daughter Marina and her husband Darren Fox.
