Story

In 1971 awarded Churchill Fellowship to study Preservation of Library and Archival Material at

Art Gallery of NSW, Sydney and National Library of Australia, Canberra.

After our return to Dunedin, I was contracted to my employer for 12 months; they having paid my wages during my study tour in Australia.

I received phone calls from Art Gallery of NSW and Australian Archives, Canberra, both offering me a job as conservator. Kathleen and I opted for a job in Canberra, where we considered we would enjoy a less stressful lifestyle, especially for our two young sons.

On 31st May 1977 we, together with our two young boys 4 & 6yo flew to Sydney, then on to Canberra.

Having no conservation facility, my job was to prepare plans, and an architectural brief for the construction of a purpose built Conservation Laboratory at Fyshwick and later Mitchell in the ACT.

It was snowing on our arrival at Canberra Airport on 31st May 1977.
