Story
Limei YANG
I came to Melbourne in June 2008. I have never spent such a long time living alone in another country. Sometimes it is really lonely because I miss my husband and daughter.
Our family got the class-136 visa in 2007. We went back to China after a short time of travel in Melbourne last year. I had no reason for leaving my homeland. My husband and I wanted to make a new life beginning in Australia, but the reality is not always the same as the ideal. In 2008, I came to Melbourne again, and as some women are doing I left my family in my home country. The journey was really hard because it was a long time to travel with heavy baggage.
I’m living in East Melbourne and there is no language problem for living as it is a residential section for most Chinese. But I find it difficult when I am trying to find a professional job. Pronunciation, accent, professional English, all kinds of pressure pushes me ahead and makes me determined to improve my English skills. I was homesick when I was trying to do my best, although I could see my husband and daughter via a computer camera.
Australia is a good country for life and work. It will give time to a new migrant especially who comes from a non-English speaking country. In the first stage I took a long time to adjust. During this time, there was much suffering, difficulties and sadness but there was also happiness. As you sew, you will reap; everyone has a good future if they really try.
