Story
Left Prijedor in Bosnia June 1964. Little or no work available. Left behind Mother, Father, three sisters and three Brothers. Milka was only twenty two years of age when she left home and went to work in a factory in Austria Vienna.
Milka met her husband who was Serbian (Dragan MiKic) while in Austria. They both then applied to come to Australia and arrived August 1966. The trip was made in a small two engine Plane (aprox 40 seater). The plane landed nine times for refueling or as Milka said every time it saw land!!
We went to a Hostel in Bonegilla and was horrified at the accomodation and food and had difficulty in communicating as she never spoke a word of English. They spent three months in Bonegila then moved to Hostel in Adelaide (Glenelg) for three months and found she was prenant. Her husband found it difficult to find work there and was offered a job back in Wodonga, so moved there. First son ( Milan) was born in Wodonga. Eighteen months later moved to Queanbeyan NSW and two months after arrival there second son Peter was born. Lived in Queanbean for twenty-eight years and loved every minute of it.
Her husband passed away August 1993. She moved to ACT in the year 2000. She said she has never regretted the move to Australia. She was nationalised in 1970. She said Australia has been very good to her and is now a fairdinkum Aussie.
