Story
My parents were born in London England and moved to Bristol in the mid thirties and that is where they spent World War 2. My mother’s birthday fell on the 26th of December 1942 and a bouncing baby boy arrived on the 27th of September 1943, so began the life of Micheal Mills.
Shortly after the war my father took up a position with the Anglo Iranian Oil Company in Abadan, and we all soon departed on a BP Oil Tanker for the Persian Gulf. I then returned to England to complete my education and joining the Royal Airforce as a Boy Entrant in 1959 – remustering to the RAF Regiment in 1961, travelling extensively around the world and being awarded 2 campaign medals, Far East and Middle East.
After leaving the Forces I worked at various jobs but was unable to settle down and upon meeting an Australian girl decided to travel back to Australia with her and have a look around. Arrived in Brisbane December 1973 – Brisbane disappeared under water in January 1974, not being a strong swimmer I decided to move to Darwin where I was severely shaken around by a strong earth tremor. I wondered what more this country could do to me and I didn’t have to wait long to find out as along came Cyclone Tracey.
We survived and moved to Queensland where 36 years later I am the father of 2 Aussies and grandfather of 5 and am myself a proud Australian and fortunate to be living in the Lucky Country.
