Story

Michael Henry Humphry was born in London c.1815 & was later referred to by his grandchildren as a “London Jew” When he was 28 he married 22 yr old Maria Ann Hann in London on 20 Dec 1843. Maria was born in Westminster 4 Mar 1821; her father was Frederick Hann a glass-cutter & her mother Maria. (Michael’s parents are unknown at this stage due to incorrect information on his death certificate).

Ten years later Michael & Maria arrived in Adelaide SA with two children Winifred Mary (9) & Emma (7) aboard the “Hyderabad” on 24 Mar 1854 as assisted immigrants from Surrey, England. A son William (2) died from diahorrea on the journey.

Michael was a Tailor in Robert St. Adelaide not long after their arrival in 1854.

It appears a son Frederick was born in England but died before they immigrated. After raising their 5 daughters in Adelaide they moved to Vic. around 1867. The girls were quite beautiful & were said to have taken Melbourne by storm.

Michael had his tailor shop in premises in Napier St. Footscray from 1881-1890.

Maria was 77 when she died in 1899; Michael died aged 89 in 1904, both at

276 Epsom Rd. Ascot Vale, and are buried in Melbourne Cemetery (Footscray)

Their daughter Adelaide Ann married Charles James Duke in 1875 & had 6 children.
