Story
Maria’s (REID) maiden name is unknown. It is presumed she was born in County Down, Ireland about 1790. She married Matthew REID, and had 3 children in Newry, Ireland. Research reveals that she probably arrived in Hobart Town on 18/2/1834 aboard the “Othello” with her husband, and three children (see husband’s information for description of that voyage).
Very little is known of Maria. Two daughters were married in Hobart in 1835 and 1837, and her husband died in Hobart in 1838. She then moved to Appin, NSW, with one of her daughters, where she d.18/7/1843.
Maria’s grave is located in St.Marks Cemetery, Appin, and her inscription reads; “Beneath the friendly shadow of this stone sheltered from all the stormy ills of life, repose in peace the mortal remains of Maria, relict of the late Mr Matthew REID, for many years architect and builder of …………… (unreadable), in the County of Down, Ireland. She departed this life on the 18th July, 1843. Aged 53 years”.
There are three known children of Maria REID;
1) Maria REID (Jnr) – b.abt.1817 Co.Down, Ireland, d.1891 Leichhardt, NSW. She married Matthew MOORE, stone mason, who also came out on Othello in 1834.
2) Jane REID b.abt 1820 Co.Down Ireland d.1894, New Zealand. She married Andrew McMAHON, English soldier, who served in India and New Zealand, taking his wife and family with him.
3) Unknown child listed on Othello voyage, though possibility he maybe Matthew REID (Jnr)?
