Story

Arriving in Sydney in 1951, during the hot month of February, I boarded the train for Brisbane. There were six people in the compartment , I noticed there was one carafe of water and one glass on the shelf. Settling back to enjoy the view I was shocked to see so many dead trees – I did not understand ‘ringbarking.’

After travelling for 3-4 hours the train stopped at the station, everybody left the train, I waited 10-15 minutes then decided to investigate. There were lots of tables on the platform with cups of teas and very dry sandwiches—- that was my first ‘Australian ‘lunch.
