Story
Kirsten had met Jay Zammit in Edinburgh in 1999. Jay was from Geraldton in Western Australia and had recently arrived in Scotland with the aim of travelling around Europe. Instead of travelling, Jay stayed in Edinburgh and started dating Kirsten. They eventually lived together for 2 and half years in Edinburgh and then decided to go to Australia to find out if Kirsten would like to live there.
Kirsten and Jay flew from Edinburgh to Geraldton in Western Australia, via London, Kuala Lumpar and Perth. The journey took place about 3 weeks after the 9/11 disaster. Kirsten’s mum was distraught that she was travelling internationally so soon after such a terrible act of terrorism.
Kirsten was immediately astounded at the distances between towns and the lack of traffic on the roads. It was very hot and windy, but it was so different to Scotland, it was very exciting. Even the sounds of the birds were different and interesting.
Kirsten and Jay travelled around Australia in an attempt to find the best place to settle down. They travelled in a tent and an old Holden Stationwagon for about 2 years, but eventually decided that Geraldton was the best place to live and ended up living 5 minutes from where Jay grew up!
They married on the 7th August 2004 and have 2 daughters.
