Story

Reason for leaving homeland – Hoping for a better life. Not a strong attachment to family due to a prolonged absense from home due to war, and ill health.

Left from Tilbury on a grey misty day going aboard the SS Orion. I was aware of the faint smell of engine oil, and the slight vibration from the engines. A very different world to mine. Luxurious leather lounges, wood paneled walls, deep carpets, and wonderful food. During the journey visiting exotic ports, Gibralta, Malta, Suez, Aden, Fremantle, Adelaide, Melbourne, and finally Sydney. Tours were organised in all of the ports, what an experience for a 17 year old. My sponsorship was via the Big Brother Movement which arranged accomodation on arrival and Job interviews.

Rather forbidding impression on arrival. Piermont with its tin sheds and aging facilities, on a very grey overcast day.
