Story
The thought of a warm envirnment was the main reason my young family, husband and I departed for Australia. As we came from the North of England with its dark satanic mills we were looking for a view of the sky that was not possible at home. We had a good life, with our own home and jobs but were still drawn to the sea sunshine and sand that Oz seemed to offer. Large houses, a big wide land.
Being fortunate enough to travel by ship, we experianced the trip of a life time as 10 pound poms. All the luxury of a 5 week cruise for the paltry sum of ten pounds. It was cheaper than moving house. Something a young working class couple could never hope to go on this fantastic journey to the Canary Islands, Cape Town and Australia.
The long overnight train journey was quite unsettling – 12 hours chugging through the unending gum tree forests that grow between Sydney & Brisbane. We did not get a good reception on the train and were treated as immigrants, Pomy ::b d:: so even then racist practices were here. But that did not deter us. We knew immediately this was home and so it has been for the last 37 years. We count ourselves as the luckiest of people to have been allowed to live in this glorious country and especially Qld. We have travelled extensivly and been “Home” many times but would never live anywhere else in the world.
Our children and grandchildren are proud Aussies who enjoy the benefit of this great nation
Thanks Aussie, we love you. X
