Joseph Line Cowley and Jane Mary Henry.
Joseph Line Cowley (1836-1901) was born in Banbury, Oxfordshire, England.
Joseph lived with his parents William Cowley and Sarah Smith in Banbury until his late teens. Joseph\’s father was a tailor and Joseph\’s brothers, William and Henry were printer compositors and they remained in England.
Edwin Cowley (1851-1904) the youngest brother, was the first family member to migrate, he arrived in Queensland, Australia in January 1865 on board ‘The Golden City’.
Joseph Line Cowley married Jane Mary Henry in 1861 at Bermondsey, Surrey,
England.
Jane Mary Henry (1840-1903) was born in Middlesex, England to William and Martha Henry, Martha was born in Ireland. Prior to their marriage, Jane worked as a household servant in Surrey and Joseph worked as a porter and lodged with a printer compositor in Bermondsey, Surrey.
Joseph Line and Jane Mary (nee Henry) Cowley, together with their young family: Joseph Richard (1862-1866), Frederick Henry (1864-1866), Sara Emma Matilda (1865-1928) departed England for Australia and arrived in 1866. They were very brave to undertake such a long sea voyage to the other side of the world with two young boys and a baby girl. The deaths of both boys aged 3 years and 2 years are registered in Queensland in the same year they arrived, 1866.
Joseph applied for a selection of agricultural land. It is believed that they lived in the Strathpine and Kilcoy areas of Queensland.
Joseph Line/Lyne Cowley died in 1901 and Jane Mary Cowley died in 1903, and they are buried in Queensland. Their daughters married selectors who farmed at Kilcoy: Sara Emma Matilda Cowley (1865-1928) married George Adsett, Mary Jane Cowley (1872-1859) married William Arundell Pryor. Their son William Edward Cowley (1875-1952) married Margaret Alice Woodhead, he was also a farmer at Kilcoy.
