Story
Joseph Bulluss was born in 1840 at Hockley Hill Birmingham and was baptised on 2nd August 1840 in Birmingham.
Joseph accompanied his parents and siblings to Australia. It is believed that they were looking for a better life and more opportunities for the family. Joseph’s father was Issac Bulluss and was a wheelwright and coach builder by trade. His mother was Mary Bulluss(nee Porter). Siblings were Alfred aged 11, Isaac aged 7, Thomas aged 5 and John aged 1.
Joseph and family sailed to Australia on “Arthur the Great” arriving on the 4th June 1856. Little is known of the voyage apart from the fact that Joseph being aged 15 was accommodated with the single men. Mary was also pregnant during the voyage to Australia and Mary Eliza was born on 10th October 1856. Another child Sarah Ann was born in March 1860. There are some newspaper reports that the vessel ran aground before berthing in Australia. There were no casualties. Other than that it seems as though the trip was uneventful.
The family settled in Geelong until 1863 when they moved to “Durhamhead ” Ballarat.
Joseph married Elizabeth Perkins of Hobart Town, Tasmania on 9th May 1862 at St Pauls Anglican Church Geelong. Joseph and Elizabeth lived in Geelong until approx. 1878. The familiy moved to Nhill Victoria around 1882.
Joseph and Elizabeth had 12 children over a 20 year period. Mary Elizabeth born 1862, John Henry born1864, Ellen Grace born 1866, Naomi June born1869, Isaac James born 1871, Annie Alice stillborn, Clara Lucy born 1876, Laura Josephine born 1878, Leslie Joseph born 1881, Leonard George born 1882, James Isaac born 1883 and Theodore Carlos stillborn.
Joseph and Elizabeth lived in Lanford Street Nhill. Joseph died at home on 2nd December 1896 and is buried in the Church of England section at the Nhill cemetery.
It is believed that Mary and all the children, except John Henry, are buried at the Nhill cemetery. John Henry is buried at Inverell NSW. Most of the graves are unmarked due to a bushfire that burnt all the wooden crosses.
Joseph is the Great Grandfather and John Henry is the Grandfather of the researcher Jeanette Clibborn (nee Bulluss) and the writer Dudley Bulluss.
