Story
John Lamont was born in Aberdeen Scotland in 1825 the 2nd child and eldest son of 7 children of James Lamont a Shepherd and Ann Grant who were married on 26 May 1822 in Durris, Kincardine, Scotland. Over 27 years James & Ann had 12 children who were christened in Durris, Kincardine, Turrif, Aberdeen, & Forglen, Banff.
John was working as a Gardener when he married 20 year old Mary Anne Taylor in her hometown of Bishops Auckland Durham England on 13 December 1851. Her father John Taylor was a Blacksmith born in Bishop Auckland 1803 & her mother Sarah Alderton was born in Winnington Durham in 1804. They had 7 children all christened in Auckland St. Andrew Durham UK. In the 1850 census only their 16 year old son John who was a tailor 13 year old William & 9 year old Sarah both “scholars” were living with them at home.
The year after their marriage John Lamont & Mary Anne left for Australia in June 1852 aboard the “Wanata” & a son John James was born at sea. They lived in Lorne near Geelong where John was still working as a gardener at the time of their second child Sarah Anne’s birth in 1854 .
The family shifted to Hope St. where John ran a Dairy yard around 1874 and Sarah Ann was married from that address that year. The property in Hope St. presumably took up the area back to Autumn Street. His occupations varied yearly from Cowkeeper, Gardener, Milk Vendor, Dairyman to Gardener again in 1884.
Mary Ann’s death on 25th August 1882 is recorded in the Geelong Advertiser: “A very sudden death occurred on Friday evening. A Mrs. Lamont residing in Autumn Street, Geelong West, was about to retire to bed about 9 o’clock on the above mentioned evening and over-exerting herself fell back and expired. She had however been previously attended by Dr.Pincott who gave a certificate that the cause of death was heart disease”.
John Lamont died at 77 in Geelong Hospital in July 1902 and is buried in the Methodist Section B Western Cemetery Geelong with his wife Mary Ann. For full family history see http://pandora.nla.gov.au/tep/10421
