Story

John James Hempton arrived in Australia from Belfast with his parents, John Hempton Snr. and Kathleen Hempton and his younger brothers, Robert, Desmond and Arthur on a ship named the Beltana. The year was 1928 and he was 7 years old.

The family came to Australia looking for a better life which they found managing hotels in country Victoria before finally settling in Carlton, Victoria. His parents had three more children born in Australia, Neville, Maureen and Donald.

John served in the 2nd World War in both the Army and then the Air Force (as a Pilot Officer), finishing his service after the war in 1946.

He purchased his first home in Moorabbin after the war and moved there with his wife Katherine (nee Supple) from Lilydale and they had two children, Kerrie and John and eventually seven grandchildren.
