Story

I left Malta in 1957 aged 17.7 years, and was employed as a Marine Radio Officer in the British Merchant Navy till late 1962, then came to Sydney to work with A.W.A in the Australian Merchant Navy, but only lasted a few months and settled in Melbourne where my cousin lived. I was not specifically migrating, I always had this spirit of adventure to travel the world and see new places and people.

My first job was a Radio Technician at the ABC radio transmitters at St Albans, then moved to TV at Ch 2 at Ripponlea…..married and moved to Perth WA and then to Troughton Island, between Derby and Wyndham W.A for a few years where I was in charge of a remote radio station working for the Commonwealth….then a cyclone devastated the place and we were picked up by the RAAF with just the clothes we had on…..myself, wife and 2 toddlers……

I was always trying to find a job in unusual places like Nauru or the Antarctic….once again part of the spirit of adventure…..Lots have happened since then, but that’s another story….Joe Agius
