Story

I arrived in Australia in March 1971 with my parents and two brothers. I’m not sure why my parents decided to go to Australia, I think it was the promise of a new life and an ad my father saw in the newspaper saying “come to sunny Australia”.

I still remember the trip over, we came by aeroplane. I remember it because it was a long flight and my ears were aching. We stopped over in Singapore and I can still remember the heat even though it was night time.

Upon arriving in Melbourne we were transported to the migrant hostel in Preston. My impressions of this time were that it was hot, the food was very different to what I was used to, and I felt very isolated at school due to not being able to speak English.
