Story
JAMES WILLIAM PETERS STORY
Born in Chatteris England in 1825 his father Charlie born in 1800 married Elizabeth Lancaster in 1821. The youngest brother to Hannah and William, he worked as a farm labourer while his father was a postman.
Times were tough then and, with the potato blight and famine approaching, his mother died in 1837 and his father Charles dying in 1840. By now times were desperate and moved to London for work, he decided may be a better life in Australia.
By now aged 24 in 1849 scraped up some money for the voyage. Leaving 16th June 1849 on a 4 masted square rigged ship called ‘Una’ along with 307 passengers.
On the 19th August 1849 there was a mutiny revolt on board (Gazette Times Sydney 24th November 1849) finally arriving in Sydney 22nd November 1849.
He moved into Glenmore Road Paddington Sydney also known as No. 1 Mary Place. While looking for work he ran into Anne Roberts a widow previously married to Thomas Green who died in 1852. James then married Anne at the Scots Church Sydney on the 3rd May 1852.
James had 2 children, John William born 1853 and William Robert in 1857 however William died soon after in 1858.
He found work as a Drayer, making carriages and carts in the south end of George Street Sydney.
He died aged 41 with fibris typhorde on the 19th November 1866; his wife lived on to remarry for the third time dying on 12th April 1906, James\’ son John died in 1930. He was my Great Great Grandfather.
