Story
James Maillard Patchell was the seventh child of John and Annie Patchell of Moneymore, Ireland. His father John Patchell was the Surgeon Superintendent of the Government Emigrant Ship ‘ Crescent’.
Two of James\’s older brothers Edward and Woodford migrated to Australia in 1854, and after four years in the goldfields moved north and were amongst some of the original settlers in Kerang, Victoria. James after finishing his studies in Accounting in the early 1860\’s decided to join his brothers in their adventures in Australia.
James took over as licensee of the Kerang Hotel in 1869 and married Ellen Collier the same year, they had three children, Ellen passing away with the birth of the third child.
In 1879 James married Mary Ryan and settled in Numurkah. They were among the earliest settlers to take up residence in the
township of Numurkah, and they produced seven children.
James as well as being an accountant was the licensee of the Commercial Hotel in Numurkah. James and Mary lived the rest of their lives in Numurkah with James passing away on 4 March 1900 and Mary in 1938, they have been followed by five generations of Patchells
