Story

Reason for leaving homeland – Jacobus (knows as John) and wife Cornelia wanted adventure, and of course to better their lives for themselves and their children Koos and Mattie.

We travelled from Rotterdam on the Waterman. It was a dreadful journey, with lots of sandstorms, bad weather and sea sickness by Mattie.

First impressions on arrival were strange, we were put on a bus, each with a brown paper bag which contained our lunch for the journey to Scheyville hostel. We stayed there for about 4 days. John found work and we were able to move to Villawood hostel, where we spend a short period. John and Corrie were able to rent accommodation in Sydney. They lived in Sydney for a period of 5 years before moving to Canberra, where they settled until moving to Yass.
