Story

In post-war Holland in a small village, Cornelius and Jacoba struggled to maintain their 15 children. Years of occupation took their toll and post war, the struggle to feed their children was still insurmountable. Father was the only earner so the older girls were sent into ‘service.’ When mum heard about Australia she spent from 1950 to 54 making 5 applications to immigrate! She finally succeeded!

We travelled in the Johan Van Oldenbarnevelt. Six weeks at sea with lots and lots of food to eat – it was paradise. We were sea-sick but we were going to a wonderful new land where there were no wars

We eventually went to Bungaree-flies, mosquitoes, no buses and poor mother so isolated, no friends next door all alone with the youngest children all day! But she soon taught herself English via the radio and madking us speak English! She ended up loving this country because of the opportunity it gave her 15 children, 57 grandchidren and 25 grandchildren!
