Story
Grace and Ian decided to immigrate from Scotland to Australia with their three young daughters, Christine 5, and twins, Jacqueline & Patricia 3, because they felt that the opportunities would be better for their family.
We travelled to Australia on the P & O liner ‘Fair Star’. We were five weeks at sea and came through the Suez Canal. I remember Dad taking me on deck to watch a camel train, walking along side the canal. I also remember seeing a great school of flying fish jumping out of the water along side the boat in the middle of the Indian Ocean. We spent a day in Perth and were able to go ashore and meet an Uncle who had immigrated in the 1950s. I remember coming into Sydney Harbour on a beautiful March morning, everyone was on deck watching the funnel of the boat. They said we passed below the Sydney Harbour Bridge with a foot to spare! We docked at pier 13 at Pyrmont.
We were met by a fellow Scotsman who drove us to Wollongong where Dad had an exchange job lined up at the Steelworks. We stayed the night in the Normandy Hotel. Everything was new, big and bright. The weather was warm. It was a good place to start a new life.
