Story
Herbert was the tenth child of George and Sarah (nee White) Humphires and was born on 20/3/1866, Bath England. There were 13 children in total, 7 daughters and 6 sons, of these 2 girls and 2 boys died in infancy. Herbert was the third surviving son. His father, George Humphries, was a flour miller in Bath, Englind. His mill was run by a water wheel a little lower down the river than the Putleney Bridge across the Avon. He had built a new steam mill to improve output. The mill had just been commissioned in 1886 when it burnt down. At that time there was no insurance cover, as the insurance papers had not arrived for signing and the family suffered severely as a result.
Being third son and not being old enough to enter the milling business, Herbert immigrated to Australia. As far as we know he arrived in Melbourne in 1886, on an unknown ship. He obviously found employment of some kind as he was able to marry Ethel Betsey Germon on 26/9/1894. They had 2 boys, the first Horace Edgar, was born 22/11/1896 and the second, Herbert Vernon, was born 1/6/1898. By this time he was working in insurance and moved to Ballarat in 1902 and then to Adelaide in 1905.
Horace Edgar migrated to England in 1920. He married Eleanor Pethitory in 1923. Sadly they did not have any children. Herbert Vernon remained in Adelaide and married Victoria Alinda Nankervis on 21 July 1927. They had a daughter, Elizabeth May Secomb and a son, Robert George. Both have married and have four children each. These children have had children and there are four boys carrying on the Humphries name. It is my understanding that these are the last to carry forward the name from all the children of George Humphries.
