Story
Henry Bowman (Senior), born circa 7822, and his wife, Mary (nee Bousefield), decided
to go to Australia accompanied by their eight children aged from 2 years to 17 years (a
ninth child was born in 1866 in Australia).
Mary’s childless, widowed twin sister was also with them, no doubt being a great help
with the children.
Also with them was a friend of their oldest son Henry (Junior), Samuel Charles Roe,
born 20th April 1841 in Surrey England.
They left London on 7th March 1864, on the “Red Rose”, arriving in Melbourne on 15th
June 1864 after a journey of 101 days.
Henry Bowman (Junior), was born London in 1847, and his second sister, Caroline
Bowman, was born 2nd May 1848. We will follow these two.
On 12th September 1868, Henry Bowman (Junior) married Elizabeth Horner who had
been born in Tandageree, Ireland in 1846.
On 6th May 1873, their daughter, Isabella Bowman, third of eight children, was born.
(After Elizabeth’s death, Henry again married, fathering another six children.)
On 8th May 1869, Samuel Charles Roe married his friend’s sister, Caroline Bowman.
On 20th August I872, the second of their eight children, Samuel Joseph Roe was born.
On 9’h September 1896, Samuel Joseph Roe married his cousin Isabella Bowman.
The youngest of their ten children was Arthur Roe, my father, born 28th December 1917.
There were three intermarriages between the Roe and Bowman families.
Samuel Charles Roe’s oldest son, William Henry Roe married Elizabeth Bowman,
Henry Bowman’s oldest daughter.
As mentioned above, Samuel Charles’ second son, Samuel Joseph, married Henry
Bowman’s third child Isabella Bowman.
Samuel Charles’ fourth child, Emma Caroline, married James William Bowman,
Henry Bowman’s fourth child.
Confused? So are we, the family, at times.
