Story

Reason for leaving homeland – Left with his family as a child. Father had previously gone to South Africa. Employment prospects not good. ‘Carrie & all her brood are going to Australia’ – family letter – 1911.

About the Journey – My father’s greatest impression was the burial at sea. On meeting his father at Durban Grandfather confessed ‘Carrie, I’ve lost the lot’ – the money he was supposed to have been saving.

Impressions on Arrival – Fascination of Australian children with his red flannel underwear. Australia really did have real flowers.
