Story

Decided to leave England on the last assisted passage, with a young family of six children, due mainly to the cost of living at home, the population increases in Sussex, the stresses of the National Health Service on Harry’s professional practice, the expectation that Australia would offer a better future for the children and the prospect of a better education for the children.

The trip by boat took four weeks with the Suez Canal closed. For the adults it was a traumatic experience, compunded by a longing homesickness, wherease for the children it was an adventure.

The initial impression on arriving in Melbourne was of a large city much like the one they had left, but with clear skys and no congestion. This was followed by a long drive to Warrnambool, which seemed to go on forever through a expansive and uninterrupted open landscape.
