Story

We left our homeland of Zimbabwe in 1962, our family of seven. We had already moved down from Zambia where the fall in tobacco prices in 1955 squeezed us out and left us with no choice but to abandon our farm between Lusaka and Chipata. My parents had originally migrated there from Great Britain with just myself in 1948, as they believed there was a future there. As we all know, after independence there proved to be no real future. That’s why my parents chose Australia.

My parents have both since passed away, but none of us children regret their decision. My book “Mysteries, Miseries and Miracles” is the whole story from 1918 to 2003.

We caught the dutch ship “Zuiderkruis” from Durban, and took a week to arrive in Albany, West Australia. We should have stayed on the ship and disembarked in Sydney, as a lot of misery was to unfold. Dad said Albany looked “poor”. We loved the bush and especially the sea after having been landlocked for 14 years.
