Story
Giuseppina Staltari was born in Delianova Reggio Calabria in 1909. Guiseppina and her family suffered periods of despair and poverty through World War 1 and again World War 2 which would be the catalyst for her family to seek a better life in Australia. Guiseppina married Pietro in 1930 and two sons and two daughters were born. Sadly their two sons both named Diego died as toddlers. In 1939 Pietro departed for green pastures in Australia leaving Giuseppina and daughters Teresa and Maria behind. Several relatives who had earlier settled in Australia had earnt sufficent money for his passage to Australia and he had hoped to work and in turn earn sufficient money for his familys’ passage to Australia. After Pietro arrived in Australia he was interred for three and half years to the end of 1943. Giuseppina, Teresa and Maria finally arrived in Australia in 1950, it had been ten years since they had seen Pietro. The family settled in Geraldton Western Australia with relatives for a time then moved to Brompton South Australia where her youngest child Guido was born in 1952. Sadly three years later Pietro died in a tragic accident and again Giuseppina was left alone. Over the next thirty eight years she struggled to provide for her children but these years were the happiest and stable years of her life and she felt very blessed to have this life in Australia. She felt enormous pride her children had made a good life for themselves with all marrying and giving her twelve grandchildren. Giuseppina’s legacy to her family was always look out for each other, give your children the best – love and attention above everything else.
