Story

George Bartram was born in 1825 in Buckinghamshire, England. He arrived at Port Adelaide from Plymouth on the Theresa in May 1847 and continued his trade as a stone-mason, residing in Kensington.

George married Frances Putland in Holy Trinity Church, Adelaide on 11 April 1848. They purchased land and built a stone house on Burwash Road, Marryatville. (See also the story of Frances Putland)

George left for the Victorian goldfields in 1851 and returned in 1852. In 1853 he moved to Yankalilla, progressively purchasing parcels of land and residing at various addresses including 17 Cameron Road, Mt Barker (1870-77). Then George and Frances and the younger family members settled at Coobowie, Yorke Peninsula. George continued in the building trade with son, John, and Frances conducted a general store. The local Wesleyan Church was built by John and George.

George had dark chestnut hair. For relaxation he collected sea shells and made pretty chandeliers, and was a successful gardener.

George and Frances celebrated their Golden Wedding on Easter Monday 1898.

Shortly before his death in hospital George remarked to his grand-daughter Amy: ‘I have been thinking about all the good deeds I have done. Ah, and the bad ones, too!’ (Apparently like most of us, he had some human weaknesses!) He died 27 January 1902 aged 77, and is buried at Edith burgh, Lot 131. Frances survived him by 17 years.

Their children were:

John Alfred born 1849 married Amelia Leverington

Henry born 1850 married Ann Rattley
