Story
It is not known why this family emigrated to the colony of Queensland. Over time they lived in different parishes in Berwickshire, Scotland. On 6th July 1883 George and Margaret and children, Euphemia, John, William, James, Peter, George, Robert and twins Mary and Adam left Glasgow on the “Anglo Indian.” Alexander Burrell (Margaret’s brother), his wife and family were on the same boat. Recorded in the “Brisbane Courier” 3rd. Oct. is,’ while passing Krakatoa Island they were literally covered with sand and small stone from the volcano.’ This event is also mentioned in the diary of George Burrell, (son of Alexander) and recorded by George Burrell’s grandson, George Albert Burrell in “Life and times of George Burrell.”
The Stenhouse family settled in Rockhampton. The parents George and Margaret found the heat unbearable and moved to Sydney in January 1886 and stayed with the Burrell family. Margaret passed away 3 months later and 3 months after that George passed away. They are buried in Rookwood cemetery. The children stayed in Rockhampton, married and many members became involved in the running of horse-drawn buses and later the motor bus services and working on the railway and other occupations.
