Story

Friedrich Hoffmann was known as Wilhelm Hoffmann, born about 1824 born in Bornst, Prussia and was a farmer. He married Anna Eleanore Wittchen and together with their three children (Ernestine, Carl Heinrich and Maria Wilhelmine) left their homeland on 30 July 1864, on the ‘Susanne’ arriving at South Australia on 25 August 1864 Wilhelm was 41 years and Eleanore was 54 years.

On 11 February 1874 Wilhelm leased land at Moppa (near Nuriootpa), South Australia with an option to purchase for 354 pounds and in September 1874, Wilhelm transferred the lease to his son Carl who purchased the land on 26 March 1881. It is interesting to note that from 1847 it was a requirement for immigrants to be naturalized in order to purchase land in South Australia (this law became obsolete around 1872), however emigrants from Prussia ceased to be Prussians the moment they received their permission certificate to emigrate.

Carl Heinrich married Louise Emma Warnest and they had nine children. The family established a mixed farm at Moppa with vineyards, fruit trees, grazing and vegetables.

In 1998, Jan Hayter produced a booklet with details of the descendants of Carl Hoffmann and this is able to be viewed at the Nuriootpa library.
