Story
Frederick James FURNER, was born about 1807, in Iden, Sussex, England. He was christened there on 7/3/1808. He married Anne DEEPROSE, on 12/6/1828, at Rolvenden, Kent, England. He was a farm labourer, however, on his daughter’s 1839 English Birth Certificate he is described as a Waterman living Ropes Walk, Rye, Sussex. After the birth of seven of their children, Frederick and Anne, migrated to Australia.
The family, comprising of Frederick, Anne, and 6 children (one died young in England) with ages varying from 1 year to 13 years, departed from London aboard the “Earl of Durham”, which sailed into Port Phillip Bay on 18/6/1842, and then Botany Bay on 11/7/1842. The voyage took its toll on the family, with the youngest child, James, dying at sea on 19/5/1842. All details of the children are recorded with their mother’s history. Also on that same voyage were Frederick’s brother, William FURNER, his wife Mary Anne, and their five children.
Frederick was an Episcopalian (a member of the Anglican Church). Within 2 months of arriving in Sydney, the family were living in Sussex Street (Ref: Sydney Morning Herald page 4, 16/9/1842). It appears that he lived in Sydney for some years, and then travelled to south west New South Wales, until he finally settled in the Carcoar area, where he continued with his labouring. He suffered cancer of the face for some 14 months, before dying there on 31/10/1871, and buried at Carcoar Cemetery on 2/11/1871. Apparently no headstone exists, nor was there any trace of an actual gravesite during a visit in 2001.
