Story

Fred, his wife Gwen and Son Alan (aged 4) left Coventry England in December 1951 to migrate to Australia to begin a new life after hearing reports of better job prospects and sunnier weather. There was still much rationing happening in England after the war and they felt Australia would be a good place to raise their children.

The journey by boat took 6 weeks through the Suez Canal and the boat was very old – it was an ex troop carrier named the Somersetshire.

The family was sponsored by a relative in Australia and after 7 years renting, they purchased their first home in Canterbury, Victoria.
