Story
In Memory of my Father, FREDERICK ALBERT CHARLES WOOD
Born in Grays, Essex, England, United Kingdom on 4 March 1912.
Migrated to Australia with his parents Albert & Maude Wood and two siblings, Edith and Kenneth.
Landed in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia on the 9 December 1922 aboard the Ship SS Beltana.
The family lived in New South Wales prior to settling in Brisbane, Queensland.
He married Agnes Kershaw Gibb in 1936 and the couple had two sons, Graham and David.
He worked as a blacksmith and coach and motor body builder, then in the timber industry as a sawyer for Brown & Broad, Newstead (Timber Merchants), Brisbane before enlisting in the Royal Australian Air Force, 7 February 1941.
On completion of basic training in Rathmines, NSW and Archerfield, Brisbane Qld he had postings to 23 Sqn RAAF, and 32 Sqn RAAF. He served in Darwin, Port Moresby and at Horn Island, Torres Strait. Whilst returning to Brisbane for leave the Lockheed Hudson Bomber A16-198 that he was travelling in missed its landing destination of Amberley Qld. And crashed into the sea off Broken Head NSW. The four crew and six servicemen on board all perished in the crash on 6 July 1942.
The crash site was officially recognized by a memorial and a dedication service at Broken Head NSW on 14 November 1999.
Fred\’s family remained in Brisbane.
