Story
Frances Putland was born 12 February 1828 in Denton, Sussex, England and was baptised in St Leonard\’s Church of England. With her parents, John and Sarah, and brothers, Henry, Thomas, John, William and George, Frances arrived at Holdfast Bay from London in December 1840 on the Royal Admiral. Frances lived with her parents in the Waterfall Gully / Mt Lofty area until her marriage on 11 April 1848 to George Bartram. (See also the story of George Bartram.)
Eleven children were born to the couple, with eight surviving at the time of Frances\’s death on 19 December 1919, aged 91. Frances is buried next to George at Edithburgh, Lot 132. Her infant sons Ezra and George were buried at Harcourt Wesleyan Church, Dairy Flat, Yankalilla, which Frances attended.
Frances sounds like a remarkable woman, a small bundle of energy, operating a general store on Lot 54 at Coobowie, Yorke Peninsula, whilst in her fifties. She received weekly supplies from the ketch Edith Alice. She received great joy and satisfaction from her garden and fernery. In her later years Frances was blind, but still knitted and stitched by feel patchwork quilts, handkerchiefs and household linen. Until a few weeks before her death she continued walking half a mile, assisted by her grand-daughters, each Sunday afternoon to attend the local Methodist Church.
The descendants of George and Frances (Putland) Bartram are listed to the fifth generation in the book The story of George and Frances Bartram and their descendants ISBN 1 86252 044 4. This book is the source of much of this information, and it also gives family histories of many of the descendants who have spread throughout Australia.
