Story
Frances Jane FURNER was born in Rye, Sussex, England, on 30/12/1838, and she was christened on 2/4/1841 to parents Frederick FURNER and Anne DEEPROSE. In 1842, at the age of three years, with her family, she sailed for Australia aboard “The Earl of Durham”, arriving in Sydney on 11/7/1842. On that voyage, her 2 year old brother died, and was buried at sea.
Her parents appeared to have stayed in Sydney a short time then moved to the Crookwell/Gouburn area of New South Wales, though it was in Jamberoo (Illawara District) that she met a young man by the name of Matthew James MOORE b.1838, Tasmania. At the age of 19 she gave birth to her first of 10 children to him, however, no records can be found of their marriage. Were they ever married? Their children’s Birth Certificate indicate so, however, the dates and location of the marriage differ eg: 23/10/1857 at Nubrigan; 9/3/1858 at Sydney; 1859 at Sydney. It is possible they never married, but just put down any date and location for the sake of the children(?). The birth places of the children indicate Frances and Matthew spent most of their time along the Great Dividing Range, NSW, in particular, the Carcoar area, but she was to die in Rockhampton, Queensland, on 18 May, 1905, suffering from Syncope (faint heart beat) and Dengue (acute viral disease transmitted by mosquitoes, resulting in fever, pain and headaches). She was living at 139 Denison Street, Rockhampton, and buried at the Rockhampton Cemetery on 19 May. Her headstone has been damaged by vandals, however all the pieces are still together, and the inscription is easily read. The head stone is laying down, buried partly in the ground, with the verse “Farewell Dear Husband My Life Has Past/I Loved Thee Well While Life Did Last/And Now For Me No sorrow Take/But Love My Children For My Sake”.
