Story
Erna Sikora, born Erna Auguste Wilhelmine Reinking, was the firstborn of 5 children. She grew up in Ilseheide now called Perershagen in Westfalia , Germany. Erna was sent to live with her grandmother who raised her. While at school Erna excelled in dressmaking.and needlework. When WW2 broke out Erna was sent to Ravensbrook Concentration Camp for 3 1/2 years and on release she wanted to leave Germany as there were too many sad memories. Erna at the age of 26, married a Polish man Jozef Sikora, in 1947. A short time later they immigrated to Australia.
Erna Sikora with her husband Jozef left Germany on the ship for Australia. The ship was very crowded and had many refuelling stops on the way.
When Erna and Jozef arrived in Australia, they were immediately separated one went to Bonegilla and the other to Windsor. This 2 year separation was the agreement to work off the cost of the transportation. The change in climate and scenery was astounding. Gum trees and stones everywhere. Then Jozef got a job in Canberra where they lived for 57 years. They had a son Joseph John and a daughter Rosemarie. They soon discovered that the soil was fertile and they grew wonderful vegetables.
The language problem was an obstacle combined with the different weights and measures they had to translate, metric to imperial. This posed problems for Jozef in getting a job as he was required to do further education to have his engineers degree recognised which he declined as he was supporting a family now. Erna did dressmaking and worked in several places in Canberra including the old CCH. Canberra Community Hospital, which has been replaced by the National Museum.
Erna experienced a sad loss when her son Joseph died in an accident at the age of 22. He was married but had no children. Erna’s daughter Rosemarie had 4 children. Erna’s life was blessed with her 2 children, 4 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
Upon retirement they moved to Dalmeny on the far south coast where they lived for 18 years and enjoyed a pleasant life in a lovely setting. They made many friends and loved living in Australia. Erna Sikora died on 21st April 2004 at the age of 83.
